Solar Heating Basics

Solar heating is the most efficient way of harnessing the power of the sun.  It is 5-10 times more efficient than the best Photo Voltaic system

One of the most cost-effective ways to include renewable technologies into a home or building is by incorporating solar hot water.

A typical residential solar water-heating system reduces the need for conventional water heating by about two-thirds. It minimizes the expense of electricity or fossil fuel to heat the water and reduces the associated environmental impacts.  In Europe and Asia solar thermal heating systems are required by building codes to be included in any new home.  This trend is quickly being adopted to North America as can be seen in Hawaii's new building codes requiring solar thermal heating

Solar heaters provide you and your family environmentally friendly clean energy to heat domestic hot water, swimming pool heating, homes and Industries. The Sun's solar energy heats a fluid (water or glycol) then transfers that solar heat directly or indirectly to heat water.

The initial cost can be slightly higher than a conventional gas or electric water heater, but the fuel... is free energy from the Sun.... And with the many grants and low interest loans available, a solar heating system can cost less than a conventional heating system upfront!

The 5 main parts of a solar water heating package are:

  1. Solar Collector – Either Solar Vacuum Tubes or Flat Plate Solar Panels

  2. Solar storage tank with internal heat exchanger

  3. Solar Pump station to circulate the heating fluid

  4. Solar differential controller to turn on and off the pump

  5. Closed loop solar piping with special solar glycol heating fluid inside
